Solfège in Personal Rep. Two of the pieces that I am working on this semester are: Quatre Visages (Darius Milhaud), Suite no. 1, Prélude (J.S. Bach). When playing Bach, everything is very calculated and it is very clear when we will be led to the home tone. The opening chord is a G major chord and the whole suite is in G major. It lets us know what key we are playing in. There are several points throughout this piece where the musician or listener can hear and feel where the notes are moving to and when it lands on a home tone. Some of the measures this can be found in are measure 4 where the notes descend from me to the home tone, measure 9 where a broken chord moves from the me to sol to do, and measure 13 where we begin on la ascending through do twice until we reach do at the top. In the first movement of Quatre Visages, the pieces moves through different keys. In some passages, you can hear chords in certain runs or bars where the same rhythm is played but copied down a third, so youo can hear it descending.

Reflection: Getting used to the notation program was a big challenge. I used Muse Score and it has many features which are so useful for notating, but one thing which was unnecessarily difficult was having two voices! I had to ask two different people to help me figure it out. While we could have written it out (and have been much easier for me), it's more beneficial to start figuring out how to use it earlier. While I started at minute 1:14 and used similar rhythms, I didn't exactly follow what I improvised. I added more moving notes because in my video I held a lot of whole and half notes since it was easier for me to figure out on the spot. I chose to notate this in cut time because when I went to listen to the backing track again that is what I felt it in, although it could be different! Something to improve on is becoming much more familiar with Muse Score and everything that it has to offer! Before starting the next assignment I plan to explore it more as well as watch videos or ask around to see if anyone has more expertise on the program.
